“Because the surface of Mimas is heavily cratered, we thought it was just a frozen block of ice,” explains Dr. Alyssa Rhoden, a specialist in the geophysics of icy satellites and scientist at the Southwest Research Institute. “IWOWs, such as Enceladus and Europa, tend to be fractured and show other signs of geologic activity.
The press release on the Southwest Research Institute’s website continues to explain how this new information came to light only after the spacecraft in NASA’s Cassini mission managed to capture the movement. Where scientists take said information from here, though, remains to be seen.
