He came home asking something very concerning.
I’m shocked by the violent and adult media that other parents allow their children to watch, and am having trouble reconciling it and mitigating damage at home.
For example, he came home talking about how to best shoot and kill a dog. As parents, we discussed it with him, asked where he heard it, and unpacked how violence makes him and other people feel. He generally backs down and seems to understand that it’s not appropriate, but also regularly implicates another 5-year-old at school as the source of this violence.
My concern is that other parents’ inappropriate media choices seem to be negatively affecting my child , and I feel powerless to protect my family from it. We can’t control how other people choose to raise their kids, but we can certainly be proactive by teaching our kids right from wrong from the jump. That means sitting down and explaining why kids his age shouldn’t view violence as a game. It seems that you’re already doing this, so you have to continue being as vigilant as possible in that regard.
