Austin Mack’s quarterback sneak lifts Folsom to its second victory on De La Salle’s home field in nine months.
CONCORD — What once was unthinkable has become almost predictable. The De La Salle Spartans went 30 years without losing to a team from this half of the state. They have now lost four such games over the past year, the latest on their home field Friday night in all-too-familiar fashion.
But the Spartans were penalized for spinning the ball in the end zone, costing them 15 yards on the kickoff. “We battled, but what about the first half? And that’s the problem with us right now,” De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said. “As coaches, we’ve got to find a way to get these guys to get more of an edge the entire game. We turn it on and we turn it off. That’s on us as coaches and that’s on them as our players. We’ve got to figure that out.
The game eventually came down to one snap at the goal line. Just as it did in last season’s regional at De La Salle, Folsom made the big play. The Bulldogs stopped Zeke Berry on a two-point conversion play in a 28-27 victory last December. This time, Folsom’s offense got across the goal line to spoil De La Salle’s second-half comeback.“We never rep that, we never practice that,” Folsom coach Paul Doherty said. “We try to keep the quarterback healthy. We try to give it to the running back.
The score did not change until Folsom drove from its 11 to the De La Salle 7 as Mack found a rhythm with his receivers, completing five passes on that series.
