More than 1,000 people can be sheltered at the South Dallas site through Christmas, city officials say.

Christine Crossley, Dallas’ homeless solutions office director, said Friday the former headquarters for homeless service provider Austin Street Center in South Dallas opened to nearly 400 people in need of shelter, and Oak Lawn United Methodist Church and Warren United Methodist Church split the rest. The downtown library will serve as a temporary overnight shelter at 4 p.m. Friday, she said, which would take up to 250 more people.
The plan is part of the city’s latest strategy to keep unsheltered residents out of the elements when it’s too cold or too hot and is centered around the former Austin Street Center building, which is a dedicated facility used for temporary inclement weather shelter. The city has used libraries and other city-owned buildings as temporary shelters. Local nonprofits and the city have also paid for hotel rooms to help get unsheltered residents out of extreme weather.
