The illness is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, and can infect both humans and animals. In severe cases, West Nile can be fatal.

DCHHS Director Dr. Phillip Huang said that West Nile cases are most often seen in the spring and summer. The number and severity of mosquito-borne illnesses in North Texas has been more mild in 2023 than in past years, he said.Advertisement

Many people infected with West Nile virus are asymptomatic, and mild symptoms can include a fever, headache or muscle aches. Less than 1% of individuals are hospitalized with significant neurological issues.Individuals should seek immediate medical attention if they experience a prolonged fever, vomiting, a stiff neck and back, loss of sensation, confusion and disorientation — or other symptoms of viral encephalitis.

: Wear insect repellents whenever you’re outside. The DCHHS recommends repellents that contain DEET and are Environmental Protection Agency Approved.Mosquitos lay eggs in wet areas. DCHHS urges Dallas residents to drain all standing water in and around their home.Limit your time outside between sunrise and sunset — mosquitos are most active during the day.

Dr. Huang said Dallas residents must be careful and remain vigilant to keep themselves safe from West Nile Virus. “You’d never think that something is seemingly innocuous as a mosquito bite could cause such severe illness and death, but it can,” Dr. Huang said. “So that’s why I would recommend everyone try to do everything that they can to prevent mosquito mosquito bites.”.
