It’s quite another when the Dallas police department can’t find official digital records in its storage system.
The integrity of the criminal justice system relies in part on the proper tagging of evidence. The good news is Dallas Police Chief Eddie García says the department discovered the problem in November after an internal audit and has since reduced the number of uncategorized files from 89,396 to roughly 52,000. Overall, the department has more than 3.8 million files in the server dating back to 2016.
Still, the incident underscores lingering city problems with talent, technology and timeliness that have plagued the city’s call systems, permitting operation and policing over the years. According to a c , 116 technology upgrades across 27 city departments are in the pipeline at a budgeted cost of $368.5 million, including 21 projects at a total budgeted cost of $123 million for the Police Department.
