Dallas can be smarter about turning parking into outdoor dining | Opinion
Council member Chad West, who represents north Oak Cliff, said in a meeting that he has heard from businesses that the city engineering reviews for the parklets are “challenging.” West moved for the council to not only make the program permanent, but to have a review in 90 days that looks at fee structures, engineering requirements and public safety concerns that may be keeping some restaurants from signing up.
That’s a smart thing to do. The city should consider what other programs it can review periodically with the goal of cutting down on red tape.Council member Omar Narvaez, the West Dallas and Bachman Lake representative, also raised the possibility that the program has a branding problem. He cited other cities that call their parking spots-turned-patios “streateries,” arguably a catchier term that makes the connection to restaurants clearer.
