Co-aces, stout lineup have Cypress Woods off to promising start in 16-6A baseball race
After no-hitting The Woodlands, Cypress Woods lefthander and Baylor signee Mason Green shut out Cypress Ranch in his first district start of the season.First-year Cypress Woods baseball coach Philip Schwarz inherited a talented roster. With several returning starters from a squad that was runner-up in District 16-6A, the state-ranked Wildcats were poised to dominate at the plate and on the mound.
Leading the charge are senior co-aces Mason Green and Chase Morgan. Behind that pair of lefthanders, Schwarz said, the Wildcats can compete against anybody. Schwarz previously led Cuero for nine seasons, earning 200 wins along the way, before spending a year at Cypress Ridge as an assistant coach. He got the call from Cypress Woods football coach Cody Simper last summer.“Obviously, this senior class is a special class,” he said. “A lot of kids are going on to play at the next level, so I don’t take that lightly. I feel like it’s an honor to be able to coach these kids, I try to show up every day and give it my best.
“He was outstanding, just like he’s been all year. …He’s got three quality pitches,” Schwarz said of Morgan. “He did a good job working ahead, throwing strikes, letting his defense work and commanding the baseball.”
