Mammone was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's department. He worked as an emergency room physician at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, according toInvestigators learned that Mammone had been riding his bicycle northbound on the scenic Pacific Coast Highway when he was hit from behind by a vehicle.
When deputies arrived on scene, Smith was being detained by bystanders. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to the sheriff's department.
