Those who couldn't physically climb the stairs for the Memorial Stair Climb walked 16 laps, or 4 miles, around the stadium track instead.Emily Armstrong had a lump in her throat. Through moistened eyes she watched as the bell was tolled in memory of her uncle, a victim of a line of duty death while serving in the Crosby Volunteer Fire Department.
“He was killed in a wreck when a car had pulled out in front of the fire truck he was driving on the way to a fire,” Armstrong said. “He swerved to avoid a collision knowing if he had hit them, he would have killed or hurt everyone in the car.” “It was one of those surreal moments when the chief came to me and asked if I would want to climb with his badge,” she said.
Stair climbs, held by departments across the country, raise funds to support the foundation’s programs that help families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. The climb was held in March instead of September to avoid unsafe summer temperatures.
