The dog followed the East Brunswick couple into the store but they ran away, according to police.

A Labrador Retriever abandoned at Home Depot on Route 9 in Old Bridge last week. The dog's owners have been charged.A 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have been charged after abandoning their feces-covered dog in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Old Bridge last week, authorities said.

The young, female Labrador Retriever followed the East Brunswick couple into the store on Route 9 at about 6:30 p.m. on May 26,said. The two, though, ran away from their dog and fled in a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer. Police later located the dog’s empty crate in the parking lot. Both the Labrador and the crate were covered in dry feces, police said.

Police have since charged the couple with abandoning an animal and cruelty to an animal after asking for the public’s help to find her owners. Both are fourth-degree offenses.“The dog is doing well and is being cared for much better than she had been while in their care,” Old Bridge police said.
