Experts say don't wait, get a flu shot now
Flu season is hitting hard and early, county experts warn, as schools and hospitals are already seeing elevated numbers of respiratory illness cases.“The most important thing you can do is get your flu shot, get that COVID booster,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, county deputy public health officer.The current surge in respiratory illnesses to be driven by the flu, not COVID-19, Kaiser said.
“If our hospitals are already reporting to us that they’re feeling that load now ... when we’re supposed to be in a lull for COVID-19, it’s going to be a bad winter,” Kaiser said. And health experts predicted that the seasonality of the flu this year would be stronger than normal. At Clairemont High, which enrolls roughly 880 students, about 150 to 180 students were out sick each day last week in the days following the school’s homecoming dance, said San Diego Unified spokesperson Samer Naji.School in San Carlos, about 1,000 of the school’s 2,600 students were absent on Wednesday in the days following homecoming.
Kaiser Permanente San Diego said Thursday it has experienced a similar surge, with 40 percent more cases over the past week than in normal seasonal levels.
