James Cameron explains how the long delay between his original film and Avatar: The Way of Water accidentally made Jake and Neytiri even better.
Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron explains how stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña inadvertently trained for their roles as Jake and Neytiri during the long wait for the sequel. Serving as a follow-up to his 2009 smash hit original film, Avatar: The Way of Water sees Jake and Neytiri seeking refuge with an oceanic clan of Na'vi after the return of humans to Pandora.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In the Avatar: The Way of Water special features included with the film's digital release, Cameron reflects on the long wait between the first and second more, explaining how it ultimately improved Worthington and Saldaña's performances. Much like their characters in the film, both Worthington and Saldaña got married and had children in the years following the release of Avatar.
“I don’t think they realized how much they had been in training for this movie for the past 13 years as parents. We couldn’t have planned it better if I’d said, ‘Okay, what I need you guys to do is find somebody you really love and get married and that’s your prep for the next movie.’ I think they started to get it when they read the script but I don’t think they really got it until they were on set with the young cast that play their children, and they realize, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve said that.
What's more, the Avatar: The Way of Water time jump allows the film to introduce some exciting new characters. Although Cameron's franchise is still very much focused on Jake and Neytiri, the introduction of characters like Lo'ak , Neteyam , Kiri , Tuk , and Spider mean the sequel can explore Pandora from an entirely new point of view.
The time jump also just allows for more logical storytelling in the sense that the RDA has spent more than a decade inventing new technology and preparing for a much more aggressive invasion of Pandora. It's also clear that Earth has become increasingly uninhabitable during the intervening years, giving the human characters all the more motivation to return in force.
