Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said he hopes House Republicans 'do their homework' for the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden that was announced this week.

Sen. John Cornyn said he hopes House Republicans"do their homework" for the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden that was announced this week.

McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry on Tuesday, stating that multiple pieces of evidence uncovered by House GOP investigations"paint a picture of corruption." Cornyn said during a conference call with Texas reporters on Thursday that he thinks House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is"doing the right thing.

The impeachment came as rank-and-file conservatives have pushed for an impeachment inquiry as part of their demands for a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. McCarthy faced pressure from Rep. Matt Gaetz , in particular, who has been repeatedly threatening a motion to vacate him as speaker.

The move could help McCarthy gain points with the House Freedom Caucus but also could alienate centrist Republicans who do not believe there is enough evidence against the president to prove allegations of influence peddling on behalf of the Biden family.Other Senate Republicans have given mixed reactions to the impeachment inquiry. Sen. Mitt Romney said he supports a House inquiry but has not seen any allegation of a"high crime or misdemeanor.

"I know the House is beginning an impeachment inquiry, I haven't heard any allegation of something that would rise to the high crime or a misdemeanor," Romney said Wednesday."It would be unusual to see a referral of impeachment. I don't expect that to happen. They can inquire and see if there's evidence that shows something else, I don't think they'll find that.
