Cold waters have delayed fishing in one of Alaska's most vital dip netting locations.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Copper River has been opened for personal use dip net salmon fishing. The fishery will be open between June 27 and July 2.
The fishery located south of Glenallen, will be open for 144 hours for dip net fishing between late June and early July, closing before the Fourth of July holiday. The near week long dip net window has, however, come late this year as cold waters resulted in a late return of salmon to the area. Despite the slow return from the ocean, the population sizes are looking good and that’s important according to the Dept. of Fish and Game.
In early June, sonar measurements and Miles Lake indicated a peak daily passage of about 20,000 salmon. Since then that count has decreased but still remains strong, remaining higher than the forecast. For the whole season, the Copper River is forecasted to see around 1.6 million sockeye salmon and about 53,000 king salmon.
