Improved pedestrian access in the area of Airport Way West, to benefit tourists and locals.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In recent years, the Alaska Dept. of Transportation has been working to improve pedestrian access in conjunction with other projects. Recently, the work around Airport Way West has wrapped up and the pedestrian access paths are now open for use.
Over the last two years, the DOT has been working on pavement rehabilitation projects along Dale Road, Airport Way, and Old Airport Way. While resurfacing, DOT also widened the road, widened the shoulders, improved or added sidewalks and made upgrades to the pedestrian access paths. “That’ll connect all Fairbanks facilities on Airport Way, right to the airport terminal,” said John Perreault, a public information officer with DOT.
While most of the work was completed in 2022, some final touch ups were made this summer, primarily adding new features to the areas surrounding the path. This includes “a signalized flashing crosswalk across Airport Way, so it’s safe for travelers to use all the way to the airport,” Perreault said. Additional work has included the installation of light posts along the path to allow travels to safely use the path during all four seasons.
“Putting in the bicycle and pedestrian access was critical because we looked at where there were gaps in those facilities and we’re looking at that all over the borough as well,’” said Perreault. “We’re trying to fill those gaps so that bike and pedestrian access is as complete as driver access.
