After the deadly crash in Dallas of two Commemorative Air Force planes in November, a Conroe-based vintage plane group hosted its first event since the crash on Saturday at the Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport.
“November was very challenging, and challenges continue today,” said John Cotter, Wing Leader for the Gulf Coast Chapter. “We lost a bunch of our friends, our family and an iconic airplane.”
Featured planes include “That’s All, Brother,” the C-47 that led the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, leading hundreds of paratroopers into occupied France, a SB2C Helldiver dive-bomber, the popular SNJ / T-6 Texan advanced trainer in which thousands of Texas airmen trained for combat, a B-25 Mitchell bomber and a twin-engine Navy transport plane.
Warbird flights start at $100 on the Navy transport. A “paratrooper’s seat” on “That’s All Brother” is $275, and seats on the other aircraft are $380 in the advanced trainer, $375 for the Mitchell bomber, and $1,195 for the machine gunner’s seat on the Helldiver dive-bomber.
“First and foremost, safety is our top concern,” Cotter said. “We don’t push our airplanes, we don’t push the weather, we don’t push our pilots. These airplanes are rare and we take care of them. The maintenance is top notch. If there’s any question, we delay the flight or not have the event until we can get the problem fixed.”
