“The Russian armed forces are not monolithic, but consist of a multitude of rival groups competing for position and sources of income,” Mikhail Komin, aanalyst with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said in an analysis of the tepid response Mr. Prigozhin’s revolt generated among many in the Russian military.

The opposition Moscow Times and others have unconfirmed reports that Gen. Surovikin, still nominally the deputy commander of Russian troops in, had advanced knowledge of the Wagner Group uprising and has been jailed for failing to head it off.
