If Proposition A passes, our city will begin to crumble.
Proposition A, the city’s Justice Charter, has raised concerns about an increase in crime amid a culture of leniency.I was born and raised in the West Side of San Antonio. For more than 30 years, I have proudly served this city abiding by the oath I took as a police officer — to protect San Antonio.
Proposition A undermines that oath. The 13-page petition developed by police-reform group Act 4 SA, in partnership with Austin-based Ground Game Texas, bundled several reforms, including marijuana and abortion, to secure community support. Referred to as a “police reform omnibus” byFirst, Proposition A cannot decriminalize marijuana and abortion in San Antonio. That can only be accomplished at the state and federal levels.
Second, Proposition A wants to ban chokeholds and “no-knock” search warrants, but SAPD policy has already banned the use of chokeholds, except in a life-or-death situation and does not utilize “no-knock” search warrants. Third, Proposition A would expand our cite-and-release policy, which would force officers to issue a citation instead of making an arrest for several crimes including all Class C misdemeanors. This means zero jail time for crimes such as $2,500 worth of property damage and up to $750 for theft of services; $750 is more than small businesses, including restaurants, can afford to lose.
