How to identify people who pose a general threat to the community remains a question, but courts have been identifying abusers for a very long time. Protective orders are issued to protect individuals from credible threats. If a court has patiently combed through the evidence and decided to issue a protective order, is a piece of paper all we’re willing to offer?
Those who have the courage to break out of abusive cycles of violence and use protective orders to secure some peace of mind deserve more. Counts’ review of our historical approach to domestic violence should be a source of national embarrassment, not the limit of the protection offered.
