A day after drafting the FBS career leader in pick-sixes, the Washington Commanders continued to bolster their secondary by selecting former Illinois defensive back Jartavius Martin in the second round Friday, at No. 47.
Martin, who goes by his middle name, Quan, gives Washington a third safety who can play inside, as the nickel on packages with five defensive backs, as well as outside.
A five-year starter at Illinois, Martin was regarded by many NFL draft analysts as the second-best safety in the class behind Alabama’s Brian Branch, whom the Detroit Lions drafted at No. 45.Coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that adding production and ball skills to the back end of the Commanders’ defense was among the team’s priorities this offseason. They drafted Emmanuel Forbes Jr., the former Mississippi State cornerback with 14 career interceptions, in the first round.
In 2022, Martin had 11 pass-breakups and three interceptions, for a 2.2 percent hand-on-ball rate that tied for the highest among anyone in this year’s safety class.
