The comedian was known for his prop comedy and his 'Sledge-O-Matic.'
Gallagher, the comedian known for smashing watermelons as part of his famous act, died Friday at the age of 76, TMZ reported.
He died of massive organ failure in California, the tabloid website said. Gallagher had been in hospice care after suffering multiple heart attacks in recent years. His trademark “Sledge-O-Matic” — an oversized mallet used to destroy an array of fruit, a parody of the Veg-O-Matic commercials — became his calling card. Each show ended in a crescendo of demolished food, most famously a watermelon.
Gallagher remained a pop culture icon even in retirement. He is played by comedian Paul F. Tompkins in the new parody biopic movie, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” The prop comedian performed in 17 comedy specials and appeared on “The Tonight Show” and “Hollywood Squares,” among other TV shows. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
