Snell still finding his way while striking out seven, walking two vs. Colorado

Figuring out Padres pitcher Blake Snell is a bit like evaluating impressionist art while wearing a blindfold. Is he making progress? Or is he dangerously tap-dancing on banana peels? Is he on the verge of a breakthrough? Or is he too unsteady to vice-grip real traction?to the Rockies at Petco Park, as Snell shadow-boxed with trouble in consecutive innings, but banked a quality start all the same.

Against the Rockies, Snell was plinked rather than pounded. Five of the six singles he allowed left the bat at less than 80 mph, including one at 53.5 and another at 64.2. Half of Colorado’s run production against him came on a sac fly. Daza’s third hit of the game that found a hole in the fifth was followed by a Brendan Rodgers’ equivalent of a swinging bunt. After a walk to C.J. Cron that loaded the bases, Jose Iglesias grounded harmlessly to first to snuff the threat.
