Columbus City Schools began mailing new bus route schedules to families recently in an attempt to fix problems. For some, it's created new issues.
The new year will bring major busing changes to students who rely on Columbus City Schools buses for transportation, but not everyone is excited about it.
The district has 542 drivers on staff, with 506 actively available to drive as of Wednesday. The transportation department also has 20 supervisors to cover routes if needed, Bryant said. The district is in a three-year contract with AlphaRoute and spent more than $1.5 million on that software, according to a May school board agenda. The district’s contract with Versatrans, which cost $95,815, started on Nov. 1 and expires on June 6.Columbus City Schools started mailing out new school bus route schedules to families last week in an attempt to fix the many complaints the district has received related to busing since the start of the school year.
“I was confused and frustrated,” the 28-year-old Southeast Side resident said. “I don’t know why she is not eligible for busing.” Columbus City Schools is required by Ohio law to provide transportation for charter and nonpublic school students if they live within the city school district's boundaries and reside no more than 30 minutes from the school. By law, the district’s transportation has to get students to school by the start of school.
