More than 18,000 cans of nonperishable food will soon be on their way to the safoodbank to help feed the food insecure. But first they're delighting visitors to North Star Mall as part of the 15th Canstruction design and build competition.
Canstruction challenges teams of architects, engineers and contractors to help raise awareness and donations for the food bank by creating outsized, whimsical structures using cans of fruit, vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, tuna and other foods. The seven sculptures, on display at the mall until Sept. 24, depict, among other subjects: the Alamo at sunset, a dinosaur chomping on a large can of food and a character inspired by a plant-based horror-comedy musical.
Canstruction also is intended to raise awareness of the fact that one in four kids and one in five adults in the community are at risk for food insecurity, meaning they do not have enough food to stave off hunger, due to a lack of money or other resources.
A partnership of RVK Architecture, Lundy & Franke Engineering and F.A. Nunnelly won awards for Most Cans and Best Original Design for their project Roberta the Jurassic CAN Opener. Inspired by the Jurassic Park films, the sculpture depicts a dinosaur made from green and blue cans of tuna fish and salmon biting down on a large can made from many smaller cans of anchovies.
