A portion of one of the country's most well-known and important waterways leads an annual top 10 list of "America's Most Endangered Rivers." The Colorado River, specifically the 277-mile stretch that runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona, was cited by the environmental group American Rivers as being
this year. Threats include climate change and what the group says is outdated water management policies. The river has been stressed by drought in recent years, which scientists say is being made worse by climate change.people, according to American Rivers. In addition, the section through the Grand Canyon is considered sacred by more than a dozen tribes. Also at risk are the region's economy and ecosystems that depend on the river.
Three criteria are used to make the list, including a river's significance to people and wildlife; magnitude of the threat to the river and communities; and a decision people can influence that affects the river in the next 12 months.Here's a look at the rest of America's Most Endangered Rivers of 2023, and the reasons they made the list:
