Brightening dark excitons with photoniccrystals TAMUEngineering NatureComms

The Fourier-optics-based spectroscopy has three operating modes: an imaging mode, an optical band-structure mode, and a spectra analysis mode. For the imaging mode, a broadband emission halogen lamp with a wavelength range of 400–2200 nm was used to provide white light. A CCD camera was placed at the image plane after the tube lens to show the image . For the optical band-structure mode, the back focal plane of an objective lens Nikon S Flour high NA objective, NA = 0.

Photoluminescence spectroscopy can be achieved by switching flip mirror to the laser mode. The sample was pumped by a wavelength-tunable mode-locked Ti: Sapphire laser and a cascade of OPO . A high numerical aperture 40Nikon S Flour high NA objective) was used to collect the PL signal at room temperature. The PL signal was then sent to the-plane imaging or the PL emission momentum distribution.

Numerical simulations of the angle-resolved reflection spectra mapping are carried out using the finite element method . We selected one unit cell as the simulation domain and use the periodic boundary condition in x and y directions and the periodic type of port to excite the horizontal magnetic field with various oblique incident angles for the input light. The S-parameter, S11, was used for the reflection spectra.

Electron cryo-microscopy reveals the structure of the archaeal thread filament - Nature CommunicationsElectron cryo-microscopy reveals the structure of the archaeal thread filament - Nature CommunicationsPili are filamentous appendages on the surface of bacteria and archaea, and play roles in multiple processes such as adhesion, motility and horizontal gene transfer. Here, Gaines et al. describe the structure of a new type of pilus, termed ‘thread’, from the model archaeaon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius.

Biasing the conformation of ELMO2 reveals that myoblast fusion can be exploited to improve muscle regeneration - Nature CommunicationsBiasing the conformation of ELMO2 reveals that myoblast fusion can be exploited to improve muscle regeneration - Nature CommunicationsMyoblast fusion is essential for development of multinucleated myofibers. Here, the authors show that ablation of Elmo 1 and Elmo2 impairs myoblast fusion in mice, and that expression of an open conformation of Elmo2 promotes muscle regeneration and improves the phenotype of Dysferlin-null dystrophic mice.
