Some callers ask to turn the music down, and others complain the music is not loud enough.
After 18 years as the liaison between the city of Indio and Goldenvoice — the promoters for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — Curtis thought he has heard it all, butset a new precedent. Due to headlining artists breaking curfew over all three nights, Goldenvoice is on the hook for $117,000 in fines. The money goes into the city’s general fund which supports police, fire and public works.
Curtis told SFGATE that Goldenvoice and Indio established an agreement in 2013 that outlines the consequences for breaking curfew. Curfew for Coachella is at 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 12 a.m. Sunday. For the country music festival Stagecoach later this month, also run by Goldenvoice, the curfew is midnight all weekend.
The agreement states that breaking curfew for five minutes results in a daily fine of $20,000, with $1,000 more for each additional minute. “In the 18 years I’ve been doing this, this is the first year they’ve had this much of a fine,” Curtis said. “They've gone over one to three minutes before, but usually it’s just one of the nights. Going over 25 minutes on Sunday, now that becomes a little problem. We are in contact with Goldenvoice to remedy this so it does not occur this weekend.”
