During an August meeting, Gordon told Mayor Justin Bibb that he wouldn’t be seeking a contract extension and mentioned his goal of spending more time with family, Bibb said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The board of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District was ready in April to extend CEO Eric Gordon’s contract – months before his eventual announcement that he would be stepping down after this school year, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, who spoke to The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com on condition of anonymity.

But the board never followed through on its April plan, the sources said, because Ohio law requires the board and mayor to agree on the pick for CEO in mayoral-controlled school districts like Cleveland. At that time, Mayor Justin Bibb hadn’t yet figured out whether he wanted to retain Gordon, Bibb told The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com in a Wednesday interview.
