Clearwater River high school student Ava Haynes medalled at the national science fair for her work on blue-green algae in northern waterways.

— Haynes took water samples and examined them for bacteria under a microscope she borrowed from her school. And she interviewed Elders, to learn about the water from their oral histories.

As she prepared for her science fair presentation, Haynes said the whole school community was cheering her on. Her friends helped her practise “about a trillion times,” and teachers would ask for updates on her research results.— though winning the bronze medal took her by surprise, she said. Haynes is not resting on her laurels. In the summer before her last year of high school, she is already heading back out to the lakes to take new samples, so she can determine when in the year the algae blooms start becoming a problem.Article content
