Unable to reach agreement, city to evict independent club from center, run its own programs there.

ANTIOCH — After more than four decades of running programs and club activities at the Antioch Senior Center, a senior club must now find new digs or dissolve as the city prepares to renovate the building and run its own programs there.

The city has secured $2.5 million in state monies, with help from state Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, to renovate the center. Prudence Capelle, president of the Antioch Senior Citizens Center, and some others, though, see the change more as a “hostile takeover.” No mail had been saved either, longtime volunteer Bonnie McNabb said, noting the club has no way of knowing whether donation checks were mailed but never received nor where bank statements wound up during the time the building was closed due to the pandemic. They’ve asked the post office to investigate.

McNabb said she later learned by word-of-mouth that the city would be renovating the center, something that has been needed for a long time.In the meantime, because the class volunteer teachers now had to become “city” volunteers, she said many of the classes did not start back up, to the point where there were just a handful left to serve the 169 members who paid $20 annually for free classes.

For his part, Helfengberger, in an Aug. 15 letter to the club, said the city met with the club leadership for six months to try to negotiate a facility use agreement that “was fair and equitable for all.” He noted that the club had not abided by the original agreement that called for it to provide daily maintenance and janitorial services – a charge the club denies. It also didn’t pay its share of the cost of natural gas, he said, though Capelle says the club has not been billed for that.

He had survived lung cancer and a stroke that left him unable to speak, and doctors were already warning that older people with his sort of medical history were especially vulnerable to the virus. He complied, more or less. But he soon felt cooped up, and one day he ventured into a crowded Starbucks near his home in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. By M
