The polls are open in Texas for voters to decide on mayors, city council seats, bonds, propositions and school board races. Here’s what you need to know.

PUBLISHED 8:18 AM CDT May 05, 2023AUSTIN, Texas. — City council races in San Antonio, including the mayor’s seat, top the list of items on the May 6 ballot in Texas, along with dozens of school board races, city council seats and bond elections.

Some of that voting momentum can be attributed to a citizen-initiated city charter amendment, known as Proposition A or the San Antonio Justice Charter. The proposition is opposed by anti-abortion groups, Attorney General Ken Paxton, the San Antonio Police Officers Union, plus Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who has cited public safety concerns.

Austin has its own police oversight measures — Proposition A and Proposition B — on the ballot. Proposition A, put on the ballot by Equity Action, would expand civilian oversight of the Austin Police Department. Proposition B, supported by the Austin Police Association, would maintain the existing oversight measures approved during meet-and-confer negotiations between the city manager and police union.
