Members of the City Council rejected, then approved, a controversial plan to install a training facility for the Chicago Fire soccer team on Chicago Housing Authority land.
The vacant Chicago Housing Authority land bordered by Roosevelt Road, 14th Street, Ashland Avenue and Loomis Street in Chicago is seen on March 23. On Tuesday, a Chicago City Council committee rejected a plan to install a training facility for the Chicago Fire soccer team on the land.
“In this proposal, land that is promised for desperately needed affordable housing to predominantly serve the needs of Black families will be given to a billionaire with negligible benefits for the thousands of families of color seeking to live in Chicago’s opportunity areas,” a group of opponents, including members of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights,On Tuesday, it appeared those cries were heard by a bloc of progressive aldermen who helped scuttle the plan’s advancement. Ald.
Ann McKenzie, a CHA official, told committee members Tuesday there would be no loss of affordable rental housing from this project so “our commitment remains the same.” Karen Vaughan, a CHA spokeswoman, said in a Wednesday statement that the agency is submitting an application to HUD for review of the Chicago Fire plan. After that is complete, the two parties can sign the lease.
Ald. Jason Ervin, 28th, who presides over most of the area in question, spoke briefly Wednesday and implored colleagues not to let displeasure with the city’s public housing agency stop them from delivering a facility that he said neighbors from the last remnants of ABLA Homes want.
