We chat with Citadel composer Alex Belcher discusses his work on PrimeVideo’s upcoming spy series, collaborating with the Russo brothers, and more:

Amazon’s action-thriller Citadel is about to establish what the studio must hope is the next big spy franchise. Created by David Weil and produced and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Citadel is a melting pot of genres and feels, blending classic espionage stylings with modern thrills, and sweeping romance with quick humor. Citadel is also the second-most-expensive series ever made, the first being Amazon’s other big gamble The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

After they did Avengers and they started [ramping up] their AGBO production company, they asked Henry and I down. They were just like, "Hey, we're going to start doing a bunch of films. Henry, you can do the ones that we direct and you can do some co-writes together. Alex, you can do some, [too]." It was just one of those things [where] we all worked well together, and they just, I think, wanted to keep that going. Hopefully, after these projects, they'll want to continue that.

It was like, "First of all, how in the hell are we going to do all this, and wrap it up, and make it sound cohesive?" I didn't really worry about trying to sound like myself or trying to not repeat myself; the big thing for me was, I haven't seen a show like this before, on this scale. [It was more], "How do I write something that fits that?" because I've got really no point of reference. That, for me, was the harder thing when it [came] to writing for Citadel.

I read that your music had been played on set, and you were writing music before filming started. What were the conversations that led you to start composing, and was that process new to you? I specifically loved the title sequence; parts of it felt so James Bond. Your music for it is perfect because it has the modern stuff but also has that sweeping classic feel. Did you look at James Bond in terms of influence in your score, or were there other projects you were inspired by?
