A politically active church is not allowed to accept local property tax exemptions. But in a nation where the national motto is In God We Trust, and where morals laws perfectly reflect the views of the most lawmakers who are Christian, is not every church politically active? At the very least, the churches teach particular sets of values, including worldviews and morals and ethics, which influence their congregations to vote for particular groups of politicians. No one will say that the Southern Baptist Conference teaches its people to be wild-eyed liberals.
No church should be allowed to accept local property tax exemptions, not in a nation that is as profoundly all of one religion as ours is. Refusing to tax the churches requires me to subsidize the political expression of those Christians who scream hate at me because I do not believe in God, which began with my own family, and who have constructed a nation of hate and violence in the name of Jesus.
