For the cover of our Cartoons & Puzzles Issue, out this week, the cover artist Chris Ware took the assignment literally, combining and finding the intersections of the visual symbols of the two forms.
For most of us, the end of the year brings downtime and leisure, a perfect launching pad for savoring the challenges and amusements of the Cartoons & Puzzles Issue. For the cover of this very special issue, only thesuch issue in the magazine’s history, Chris Ware took the assignment literally, combining and finding the intersections of the visual symbols of the two forms.
John and I were going to do a bonus short cartoon about the two cover characters, who I’ve been thinking of as ○ and □, each finding a four-leaf clover at the zoo in the gnu enclosure, given that the crossword grid that Paolo P. designed looked sort of like a four-leaf clover. But we couldn’t, because we ran into legal issues with the rights.
