Chris Paul took time with The Arizona Republic to talk about his new book, 'Sixty-One: Life Lessons From Papa On and Off The Court.'
Q: OK. With the NBA finals ending, what was it like seeing Coach Malone win an NBA championship? I know you want one, but how did you feel about seeing him win it all?“I was so happy for him. So happy for him. I reached out to him. I talked to Ish Smith. I’ve known Ish since he was at North Carolina. Wake Forest guy and I talked to D.J. for a while.”
Q: You start the book the afternoon of the game with your family and how you’re having these different thoughts and emotions. Then you have different stuff after that like stories about your grandfather. You then go into the first half of the game, have stories in between that, the second half of the game and stories. The stories range from recent to back when you were a kid. How did you come up with that format?“We just wanted to make it interesting.
Q: You write about how you took your kids to the service station your grandfather owned. One of the lines that sticks out is you said those same weeds are sneaking through the sidewalk at the station. How big was it for you to have your kids see not only your grandfather’s history, but that’s your history when you were their age?“It meant a lot because we didn’t do those experiences for the book, if that makes sense. It’s interesting because my kids have been in L.A. the majority of their lives.
