Russia’s war in Ukraine portends China’s victory in a war over Taiwan, according to Beijing's top envoy in Moscow.

“Instead of learning a lesson from its failed line on the Ukraine issue, the United States has artificially linked it to the Taiwan issue; an even greater crushing defeat awaits them,” Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui told TASS, a Russian state media outlet.

“Colluding with external forces to make provocations and seek independence will only accelerate their own demise and push Taiwan into an abyss of disaster,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Thursday."Their ‘Taiwan independence' separatist agenda will get nowhere. Betraying the interests of one’s country and nation will surely result in utter failure.

Most countries around the world severed diplomatic ties with Taipei as a precondition for establishing relations with the regime in Beijing — a pragmatic step motivated in part by the Western desire to drive a wedge between the Chinese Communist Party and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
