The latest launch raised the total population of humans in orbit to 17, setting a new record.

The number of people in orbit reflects a shift in the space industry, with countries like China going big with their space programs. Aside from its newly minted space station, China recently announced its plans to land a crew of astronauts on the Moon by 2030.

During a press conference at the Jiuquan launch center ahead of the Shenzhou-16 mission launch, officials from the Chinese space agency revealed that they have started planning for a crewed lunar landing, SpaceNews“Recently, the moon landing phase of China’s crewed lunar exploration program has started,” Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency , is quoted as saying at the press conference.
