Founder Roosevelt Brown, now 80, wants to ensure children don’t struggle with reading like he once did. His event — about to enter its 40th year — takes place Saturday, April 29, at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
For the 39th year, thousands of brand new books will be given out for free at the annual Children’s Book Party next week in Balboa Park.
“I’m not an educator, but I do know reading is good for you,” said founder Roosevelt Brown. “Books can help you understand the world around you.”“You cannot explain the expression on their faces,” Brown said. “They go, ‘Wow!’” The first official Children’s Book Party was held in 1984 in Brown’s backyard. Since then, it has grown tremendously.
“I had a very serious speech impediment, and I was afraid the teacher was going to call on me to read and participate, so I was just sitting there all day with my fingers crossed,” he recalled. “I was not concentrating on my lesson; I was concentrating on surviving.”
