Emotional moment as Henry Richard, who lost his younger brother, Martin Richard, in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, crosses the finish line. He was 10 years old when his brother was killed in the bombing.

Evans Chebet, of Kenya, breaks the tape to win the Boston Marathon, Monday, April 18, 2022, in Boston.

“On a day like today I just want to thank God. When I came in 2018, my performance was not as good. Today my performance was better,” a smiling Chebet said through an interpreter. Scott Fauble was the top American finisher, coming in seventh at 2:08:52. Kenyan-born American Elkanah Kibet was ninth in 2:09:07. C.J. Albertson was 13th in 2:10:23

For the second straight year, Albertson shot to the front of the field at the start and stayed in contention, trading the lead with Kenya’s Bethwel Yegon. Chibet and Geay later broke away from a lead pack of about 20 runners as the group emerged from Heartbreak Hill around Mile 22 as Albertson and Yegon fell back. Albertson ultimately crossed 13th.
