Authorities said the driver made eye contact with an officer while in the stolen vehicle and sped off before crashing into a tree.

During a press conference, police said they initially got a call Monday morning about a car stolen on the city's west side at an apartment complex. At least two stolen cars were seen at the complex, according to investigators, and an unidentified man got into one of them when police started following.
That's when the driver made eye contact with one of the officers and tried speeding off. A brief chase ensued, where authorities said he was driving in the opposite lanes a few times before hitting a curb and popping two of the tires.The car thief, however, kept on trying to flee but officers circled around the area and initiated a pit maneuver. That's when one of the officer's patrol cars hit the stolen vehicle, causing it to hit a curb before hitting a tree.
Verbal commands were given to try and get the driver out of the crashed, stolen vehicle but when they realized he wasn't responding, authorities said they quickly started to render aid and called the Houston Fire Department for assistance.
