Charter Communications CEO Chris Winfrey said on Thursday that there’s a growing possibility the cable firm’s ongoing carriage dispute with Walt Disney could result in the permanent removal of ESPN and other Disney linear channels from the company’s video service.Charter customers have been without access to ESPN, FX, ABC, and other Disney channels since last week.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology conference in San Francisco, Winfrey said that programming pricing has been increasing faster than inflation, forcing Charter and other cable companies to charge more to deliver customers programming that they don’t always want or can’t afford. He says that content creators are milking profits from their eroding linear businesses to drive growth of their direct-to-consumer subscription streaming services.
Winfrey said it is “more and more a potential reality” that Charter will never restore Disney content to its cable platform. He says that outcome would allow Charter to offer a smaller package of channels at a “much better price,” and that the company could grow the narrowed service from there. “It might be good for us over time,” he says.
“If we’ve moving on, that’s okay,” he says. “It might not be good for the rest of the video ecosystem, but if it is in the best interest of Charter shareholders and customers, that is where we are going to go. The Charter CEO says Disney—and how it approaches pricing ESPN—are the heart of the issue. “ESPN is the linchpin,” he says. “They can lead here and drive the industry. I’m rooting for them to make that decision.”
