If you have monkeypox, you should quarantine your pet for three weeks, the CDC urges after a dog tested positive.

Aug. 17, 2022 -- After the monkeypox virus has been found in a dog, U.S. health experts are expanding their quarantine recommendations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging afflicted people to quarantine their pets for three weeks. The idea is to help curb the spread of the disease, following news that a dog in France tested positive. “Infected animals can spread Monkeypox virus to people, and it is possible that people who are infected can spread Monkeypox virus to animals through close contact, including petting, cuddling, hugging, kissing, licking, sharing sleeping areas, and sharing food,”Pets exposed to somebody with monkeypox should be separated from people and other animals for 21 days, the CDC says. People who are infected should let others care for their pets.

“If the person with monkeypox did NOT have close contact with pets after symptom onset, ask friends or family members who live in a separate home to be the animal’s caretaker until the person with monkeypox fully recovers,” the CDC adds.“We are still learning which species of animals can get monkeypox,” the CDC says. “Not all animals have a rash when they have monkeypox.”says that in June, a dog in France was confirmed to have the disease after its owners tested positive.
