Cathedral raced out to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes and eventually proved far too athletic for the Chesterton in a 65-31 thumping.
The Irish came out and hit consecutive 3-point baskets, one by Jake Davis just nine seconds into the game and the second by Jaron Tibbs 32 seconds later. That 3 forced Chesterton coach Marc Urban into an immediate timeout.
The break didn’t stop the Cathedral onslaught, however, as the Irish had leads of 10-0, 13-2 and 22-7 during the first quarter, then built advantages of 36-21 , 49-27 and, eventually held a 38-point, 65-27 advantage with 3:48 left in the game. Cathedral last won the state title in 1998, and this victory made coach Jason Delaney the first in IHSAA history to coach three different schools to state titles. Delaney guided Waldron to the Class A title in 2004 and Tech to a 4A title in 2014.
Perhaps the stat best illustrating Cathedral’s dominance is it set an all-time, all-class state finals record for blocked shots in the game with 14 — breaking the old record by two. The record-breaking 13th block was most impressive as 6-6 senior Jaxon Edwards thwarted a dunk attempt by Chesterton’s 6-6 sophomore Justin Sims.Tibbs led four Cathedral players in double figures with 15 points. Edwards finished with 14 points, Xavier Booker netted 13 and Tayshawn Comer 11.
