Casey Schmitt is the type of player that can reinvigorate the Giants' fan base.
In the same way Bart was the heir apparent to Posey, Schmitt looks like he’ll assume the mantle of shortstop from Brandon Crawford sooner rather than later. Unlike Bart, Schmitt looks like he may actually be up to the task. That’s exciting — genuine excitement, not the “hey, it’s going toto go on” offseason that the Giants are still desperately trying to sell. Schmitt’s future is something for fans to buy into.
But let’s leave last winter out of it. The team hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire this season, well under .500 at the quarter pole of the season, and a fan base that already seemed prone to apathy is further moving down that path. Dwindling attendance figures are no accident. People still root for the Giants, but it’s hard to care as much.
Schmitt’s arrival couldn’t come at a better time. For years, the Giants have been touting their growing stash of prospects throughout the minor leagues as proof that their soft rebuild would eventually pay off. And while getting high marks from prospect evaluators is nice, fans eventually turn into Mike Singletary and say, “Don’t tell me, show me.”
Schmitt’s immediate success is a nice reminder that Giants’ hitting prospects can, in fact, make it out of the system. If he continues to prove he belongs — and at this point, the Giants should give him an extremely long leash — then maybe there’s hope for the other major prospects.
It’s the kind of success that can reinvigorate a fan base, even if the 2023 team continues at its current pace. If the system starts producing players, then losing and big-league malaise become more palatable. “Sure, they may not be that great now, but just think of how good these guys will be in a year or two.” Fans felt that way in 2009, and the next few years turned out pretty OK.
