Immersive Experience Laboratories is working with VCU, UABNews, and UNSW to test how a virtual walking simulator called VRWalk can reduce neuropathic pain among people with spinal cord injuries, including those who are paraplegic or tetraplegic.
A Birmingham-based virtual reality company is leading a study in how gaming can improve the quality of life of people with spinal cord injuries .
The virtual reality software shows a first-person perspective of participants’ hands and legs while they walk through different environments, such as a snowy village or a desert outpost. The game is a form of visual feedback therapy, such as mirror therapy treatment used for people with phantom limb pain. When someone places a mirror next to a person’s leg, the mirror image tricks the brain into perceiving both limbs are still active.
“You answer a couple of questions, and then you’re in the world, and you collect coins,” Shum said. “You explore the world like in a RPG. But in the game world, you’re standing on legs, you can look down and see the legs, and you cast shadows.” “If the value and the benefit to you is high enough, then you’re more likely to make time and space in your daily routines to do it,” Cowan said.
