For years, whenever her mother asked who would care for her as she grew older, City Heights resident Teresa McInerney always happily volunteered.
Caregiver Teresa McInerney has gotten help from a free respite program through the Southern Caregiver Resource Center. The stress of nonstop caregiving and lack of outside income had prompted her increasing dependency on alcohol; respite care allowed her to seek sobriety treatment., When tasked with helping a loved one with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, feeding and going to the bathroom, it can sometimes leave little to no time for family caregivers to care for themselves. For many unpaid family caregivers like McInerney, respite care is a necessary tool used to help support loved ones.
as the exhaustion caused by the emotional demands of caring for a loved one while balancing other priorities, work load and a lack of privacy.report experiencing clinically significant levels of stress anxiety or depression. The survey also found that 14 percent of caregivers used alcohol to cope with their stress, 18 percent used medication and 57 percent used food.
Having a break afforded by respite care was necessary for McInerney to care for her own mental and physical health.
