“A new event centre in Calgary is more than just a building. It’s foundational infrastructure,” said Coun. Sonya Sharp, who chaired the city’s committee tasked with reaching a new deal. There are no preliminary designs or timelines for construction at the early stage of the deal, Mayor Jyoti Gondek said.The $1.22-billion price tag doubles the cost of the previous deal, which initially rang in at $550 million before cost escalations pushed that bill to $634 million.
