Before this season — his fourth in the NHL — he had only reached 30 minutes six times, playoffs included. In just the first 40 games of 2022-23, he had eight 30-minute games. Resting him during the third period was a concerted effort. Monday’s rout of Detroit was the first time Makar played fewer than 20 minutes since March 18, 2021. He had played 20 or more in 176 consecutive games, including playoffs.
